Renewing one of Beijing’s largest single-building retail destinations

A phased renovation of one of Beijing’s largest single-building retail destinations, originally opened in 2004 as the world’s largest shopping mall. Beijing Century Golden Resources Mall, known affectionately to Beijing residents as “The Big Mall”, is located on the Northwest Fourth Ring Road in Haidian District, beside the Kunyu River. At 615,000m² across 18.2 hectares,. it remains one of the largest single commercial buildings in the country. After more than two decades of operation, the mall is undergoing its largest renovation to date, a phased programme by Benoy to renew the building’s identity, performance and architectural relevance.

Architectural language drawn from the existing site

The transformation distils the existing mall. Traditional textures and references familiar to the building’s long-standing visitors are paired with flowing, wave-like geometries, retaining the building’s collective memory in the city while updating its architectural register for a new generation of users.

Sustainability across building envelope and operation

Environmental performance is embedded across the renovation. Façade materials are locally sourced and recyclable. The building’s carbon footprint is tracked across operation. Passive and active strategies include rooftop photovoltaic generation, façade sun-shading, and natural ventilation through the public spaces.
The renovation is being delivered in phases, with the Western Zone (Section A) as the first phase. Other areas remain operational throughout, with overall completion expected in 2028.
