Small-scale urban renewal in the heart of Jing’an, Shanghai
Bright City Kitchen opened in June 2025 as the anchor programme of the Caojiadu Civic Center at 888 Changping Road, Jing’an District, a community-focused development jointly delivered by Guangming Food Group and the Caojiadu Subdistrict Office. Benoy’s scope covered the integrated renovation of both façades and interiors for the street-facing commercial buildings. A practical expression of Shanghai’s 15-minute community life circle, the project pioneers a “community canteen+” model, uniting dining, leisure, reading and social interaction within a single 800m2 venue.

The bespoke aluminium-brick façade draws on the historic grain of surrounding alleyway houses and brick public housing, extending that material language through specially crafted masonry. The colour is a precise Bordeaux red, drawn from Guangming’s classic ice brick ice cream, translating a shared cultural memory into a tactile architectural texture. At the entrance, red aluminium panels are composed with lightness and precision, avoiding the heaviness of traditional brickwork while retaining warmth and familiarity. Crisp white canopies complete the composition, reinterpreting the shading elements of old breakfast shops as a contemporary streetscape installation.

Inside, spatial planning dissolves the conventional boundaries of a dining venue. Movable tables and chairs in the outdoor dining area allow a seamless transformation from restaurant to community market in under 15 minutes. A circular dining loop connects diverse functional areas, evoking the rhythm of city streets. A reading corner, softly screened by green partitions, serves as a quiet retreat by day and a community classroom by night, giving a 597m2 space a reach well beyond its footprint.
