A 500-metre route through four zones in southern Changchun
Benoy led the interior design and commercial planning for Grand Shopping Center Changchun, a 160,000m² mixed-use retail destination in the city’s emerging southern business district. The project sits at the intersection of Nanhu Middle Street and Huayuan Road, an area increasingly described as Changchun’s new urban sub-centre. It marks Benoy’s second collaboration with China Grand Enterprises, following the practice’s interior work on Grand Shopping Center Chengdu.

160,000m²
Four zones, a single 500-metre route
The complex is organised across four zones: a shopping mall spanning Zones A, B and C, with an above-ground vertical rotating car park forming Zone D. A 500-metre circulation route connects all four. The length of that route was the central design challenge, a single uninterrupted run carries the risk of visual monotony, and the response was to give each zone a distinct character while maintaining continuity through paired walkways, glass curtain walls and an undulating ceiling that runs through the project.
A different register for each zone
Zone A is set up for fast-paced family retail. Zone B offers a slower, more relaxed shopping environment. Zone C is calibrated for younger visitors, with leisure facilities and a more contemporary register. The three retail zones read as distinct interiors but as part of a coherent whole, tied together by interior features, the ceiling and walkway treatments, that carry across the boundaries between them.A series of interactive nature-themed installations were developed with China Grand Enterprises across the complex, providing shared visual reference points across the zones.
