Two sections, one idea: a retail destination growing with its city
Chengdu Grand Shopping Center opened in two stages on the southern section of Tianfu Avenue in Gaoxin District: Section A in December 2020 and Section B a year later. The 130,000m² complex is China Grand Enterprises’ first retail destination in southwest China, sitting at the intersection of Chengdu’s high-tech zone and Tianfu New District and part of a wider southward shift of the city’s commercial gravity. Benoy delivered interior design and retail planning across both sections, working within an existing structural framework.

130,000m²
A concept built on growth
The organising idea is growth: the shopping centre as a seed planted in the emerging southern core. Section A’s eight-storey interior centres on two slowly ascending crystal boxes in the atrium, serving as both spatial centrepiece and commercial anchor. Recessed floors are staggered to keep ground-level activity visible from every walkway above. A curated marketplace on the seventh and eighth floors draws on simplified forms from Chengdu’s traditional architecture, with contrasting materials and colours creating a more intimate experience at height.
Section B: fashion, energy and the next generation
Section B targets a younger, fashion-forward audience. The palette shifts to purple and gold, with glass and dome structures flooding the interior with light. The linear plan opens at the main entrance into raised platforms and a sun-facing courtyard. Lift lobbies face main traffic flow rather than tucking into corners, each a luminous destination. At basement level, a star-studded ceiling defines afternoon tea, creative bookstores and lifestyle retail, connecting directly to Huafu Avenue Metro Station. The link between sections is a destination: the 11PM SHOW, an immersive tunnel of programmable ceilings, high-output projection and 3D parametric design transitioning from Chengdu Metro blue to Section B purple as wayfinding.
