Sparking a wave of rejuvenation along Singapore’s premier shopping street

Centrally located on Singapore’s iconic Orchard Road, ION Orchard creates a gravitational centre for retail, repositioning the eastern end of the street as a luxury corridor. Drawing inspiration from the site’s history as an orchard, the building’s form references the branching structure of a tree. Negotiating the constraints of the existing underground transport network through structural innovation, the development provides a layered retail programme that contributes to Orchard Road’s evolving urban identity. Since opening in 2009, ION Orchard has consistently ranked among Singapore’s top five most visited malls, drawing up to 40 million visitors a year and achieving some of the highest sales per square metre in the city’s competitive retail market.

The façade as urban stage

The design of the façade draws on natural textures and the site’s productive past. Across the façade, a fractured array of triangular LED screens create a platform for large-scale multimedia art. Its self-supporting shell enables seamless movement through the interiors. At ground level, an exterior canopy formed by two soaring tree-like columns provides 3,000m² of sheltered public event space along the northern edge of the site. Spatial sequencing and digital artworks continue indoors, providing intuitive circulation through more than 300 retail and F&B units across eight levels. In line with the Singapore Urban Redevelopment Authority’s strategy, the 126,000m2 scheme balances density with open public space, creating a pedestrian-led destination well beyond the conventions of a shopping mall.

Seven entrances, one destination

The programme is organised around the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) infrastructure, with seven entrances throughout the site. Retail, leisure and a 56-storey residential tower combine to create a hub of activity. An observation deck with 360-degree views and an art gallery crown the tower, offering views across the city. Combining the retail podium, public spaces, residential tower and leisure uses into a single interconnected development, the scheme demonstrates how vertical mixed-use can elevate retail into a broader lifestyle offer.

Lasting Impact

Since opening in 2009, ION Orchard has ranked consistently among Singapore’s top five most visited malls, drawing up to 40 million visitors a year and achieving some of the highest sales per square metre in the city’s retail market. The development was named Luxury Mall of the Year at the 2025 Retail Asia Awards.  Flagship and debut Singapore stores for Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Prada, Dior and Giorgio Armani have reinforced Orchard Road’s standing as one of the world’s foremost luxury retail destinations, with ION Orchard’s success promting wider redevelopment along the street and contributing to Singapore’s tourism and retail economy.
