Intelligent life exploration hub in Zhangjiang Science City

L City is a commercial interior design commission for Lujiazui Group in Zhangjiang Science City, Shanghai’s state-level technology and innovation district, home to a concentration of high-calibre research talent and high-tech industry. The complex spans six above-ground floors and one basement level across five connected plots linked by underground passages and sky bridges.

Warm Tech Aesthetics

The interiors respond to the specific character of Zhangjiang’s population: technology professionals and families seeking an environment that goes beyond a functional shopping trip. L City is organised around a five-planet theme (Saturn, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury) that structures seven distinct themed spaces across the complex: Rhythmic Mirror, Cloud Market, Parallel Universe, Fragrant Arcade, Fragrant Garden, Transfer Space Station, and Super Food Zone. Each zone draws on a different aspect of the exploration narrative, from laboratory optics and cloud forms to an underground Transfer Space Station linking the five plots via a futuristic corridor of mechanical screens and rhythmic lighting.

Sustainability and material strategy

Material selection prioritises durability, recyclability, and reduced construction waste throughout. GRG is used for double-curved irregular forms while minimising mould waste; seamless Corian extends the lifecycle of high-use surfaces; anodised aluminium panels are corrosion-resistant and fully recyclable. The Cloud Market’s skylights reduce daytime artificial lighting demand, the Jupiter Zone’s sunken plazas bring natural light underground, and a thin water layer on the core light canopy uses evaporation to regulate the microclimate. Smart zoned lighting controls operate on demand across the full development.
