Public realm design rooted in the local history of a Maltese community
Landscape concept design for a mixed-use redevelopment in Żebbuġ, Malta
The New Toyota Complex on Mdina Road, Żebbuġ, is a proposed redevelopment of the Debono Group’s long-established Toyota showroom site, a location with over 70 years of history at the heart of the local community. The development will deliver Grade A office space for knowledge-intensive businesses, complemented by retail, food and beverage, and leisure uses within extensive public open spaces designed to create a new destination for the central region of Malta. Benoy was appointed to develop concept and schematic landscape design for the site, with an accessible, biodiverse public realm that balances the site’s contemporary programme with its local historic and natural character.

Drawing from local history and landscape
The landscape design takes inspiration from the site’s deep roots in Żebbuġ, the Debono Group’s connection to this location spans more than seven decades, translating that local identity into a contemporary public realm that feels genuinely rooted in its setting rather than imported. The scheme is fully accessible and designed to serve a wide range of users and age groups, with a varied sequence of spaces offering different types of experience and dwell.
Sustainability and biodiversity
A robust sustainability strategy underpins the landscape proposal, seeking to minimise environmental impact while enhancing the ecological value of the site. The planting strategy prioritises biodiversity, creating a public realm that supports native species and strengthens the natural setting, appropriate to a development that aspires to sit harmoniously within Żebbuġ’s predominantly low-rise urban grain.
