Expansion and refurbishment of one of Orchard Road’s oldest shopping malls.
Plaza Singapura, at 68 Orchard Road, was first opened in 1974 and is one of Singapore’s oldest continuously operating shopping malls. The 2012 expansion and refurbishment added 28% more net lettable area, bringing the total to 58,000m2 across seven retail floors and two basement levels. Benoy delivered the architecture and interior design, working alongside RSP and MERO. The development received Singapore Green Label Scheme certification.
The defining element of the refurbishment is the new façade, a 170-metre frontage of elegantly flowing ribbons of glass and metal that draws its formal language from the historic Stamford Canal running along Orchard Road. The wave-like facade is one of the longest frontages on Orchard Road, and its sculpted, fluid form contrasts with the more conventional commercial buildings that line the street. A remodelled front plaza creates a public stage for events and activations at street level. Inside, the interior design focuses on dynamic forms and natural light, with a glass treatment that gives the mall a sense of openness and fluidity throughout.
Integrating the Atrium@Orchard
The project converted the first three levels of the adjoining Atrium@Orchard from office to prime retail space, connecting them to the expanded mall via internal walkways at levels 1, 3, and 4. The combined scheme sits directly above Dhoby Ghaut MRT interchange, one of only a handful of Singapore malls positioned above a three-line interchange, serving the North South, North- East, and Circle Lines simultaneously.
