Interiors for a multi-function office building at Shanghai’s Expo
The interior design commission for Chifu Investment Holding Group includes a large multi-function hall designed to accommodate approximately 500 people – a scale that presented specific challenges around spatial layering and crowd dispersal within an office environment.

To introduce greater spatial complexity and a stronger sense of experience within the office hall, Benoy adjusted selected structural floors to allow the core tube to run independently, creating a more layered spatial sequence that moves away from the uniformity of a conventional office floorplate. Crowd dispersal in the multi-function hall was addressed through a switchable escalator system: two-way escalators that can be reconfigured to operate one-way in response to the direction and volume of people flow, providing flexible control over circulation during large events and more relaxed daily use alike.
