Where commerce and culture meet in Pudong
Shanghai Huamu Time Edition occupies one of Pudong’s most culturally concentrated locations, surrounded by the Shanghai Museum East Hall, Shanghai Library East Hall, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Oriental Art Centre and Century Park. Benoy’s interior design concept, ‘Framed: A Fusion of Eastern and Western Commercial Art Galleries’, responds to that setting by treating each retail space as a framed exhibit, inviting visitors to move through 47,000m² of retail as they would a gallery. The complex sits within a mixed-use development with KPF as architect. A 7,000m² central plaza connects three 180m Grade A office towers, retail and the Shanghai Museum East Hall.

Reworking the existing building threshold
A narrow, low-ceilinged entrance at the existing building threshold was redesigned as an expansive gateway using reflective materials that open the space visually without added material weight. The central atrium was reconfigured as a ‘floating’ volume, increasing spatial flexibility for future programming. On the basement level, a soft partition approach without solid walls blurs the boundary between circulation and retail.
Daylight, climate and opening
New ceiling structures, developed through scientific modelling, balance natural lighting with energy efficiency, reducing heat gain at Shanghai’s summer peak and lowering air-conditioning load without compromising retail light quality. Indoor greening integrates plants with geometric structures to improve the internal microclimate. The complex holds LEED Gold pre-certification. The development opened as the Pudong sub-venue for the Shanghai International Light Festival, with programming including the POIZON trend market, an international artists’ debut exhibition and China’s first XR immersive exhibition.
