A human-scaled district
The design concept explores a passage in the Analects of Confucius on the feeling of fullness and ease in springtime, and “Joy Breeze”. The scheme is organised as a series of small-scale spaces, pavilions, terraces and streets, linked by a circular route. This arrangement places discovery at the centre of the scheme. A multi-level thoroughfare connects levels. Spatial blocks and façades carry Joy City’s branding in its architectural expression.
Environmental performance
A green coverage permeates the development. The kinetic façade of 6,116 m2 clad with 68,000 orange maple leaf panels, manage solar radiation and natural ventilation. A rainwater harvesting system saves over 5,000 tonnes of water annually; the project was certified a Water-saving Enterprise in 2022. High-efficiency building services, developed in collaboration with Tsinghua University, achieve a cooling station operating efficiency of 5.2. The design approach has been included in the White Paper on Low-Carbon Transformation of Commercial Complexes.
