A masterplan rooted in a century of urban history
Taihe 1903 Yunnan Diamond sits at the heart of Kunming’s city centre on Beijing Road, within the China (Yunnan) Pilot Free Trade Zone. One of the most transit-connected locations in southwest China, the site serves over 25 million passengers annually and marks the beginning of the Pan-Asia Railway corridor. In 1903, construction of the Kunming–Haiphong railway began at the northern end of the site; by 1966, the new Kunming Railway Station stood at its southern end. Two diagonal ancient river channels and urban green nodes on the east and west sides give the site its distinctive diamond shape. Benoy was appointed by Top River Group to develop the masterplan, urban renewal strategy, and architectural design for the 1,377,000m² site.

The Diamond of Yunnan
The masterplan introduces the “Diamond of Yunnan” urban spatial structure, drawing on the site’s natural geometry to establish a framework of two retained diagonal axes that connect existing urban nodes. Rather than imposing large-scale new construction on a complex inner-city site, the strategy refines the existing urban texture, unblocking the road network, integrating fragmented plots, and introducing a mix of uses that blends ecology, production, residential life, and commercial vitality. The masterplan proposes a ring, two axes, and four quadrants, creating a legible spatial order across a site that spans from the historic Yunnanfu Railway Station to the modern Kunming Railway Station, a century of urban development held within a single frame.
Kunming as international gateway
The project’s ambition extends beyond the site boundary. The scheme establishes a phased, deliverable framework for urban renewal that supports Kunming’s role as a showcase for China’s regional connectivity, while grounding that international ambition in the ecological and cultural character of the city.
