A renovation of one of Guangzhou’s first modern shopping centres

Benoy led the interior design, wayfinding and signage, and landscape for the renovation of Teemall in Guangzhou’s Tianhe District CBD. Originally opened in 1996 as one of the city’s first modern mega malls, Teemall extends across seven retail levels and draws around 295 million annual visitors. The renovation was delivered for GDH Teem and covers 23,000m2 of public space, from basement level B1 through to the seventh floor and the rooftop garden.

An integrated approach within an operating mall

The renovation was developed inside the constraints of an active building, working around existing structure and live retail operations. Benoy coordinated closely with the local design institute and the client team to resolve the conditions in detail, with the analysis of existing fabric shaping the design strategy from the outset rather than as a downstream adjustment. The mall continued to trade through the upgrade, with new finishes, fittings and circulation tied to the rhythm of the existing building.

Ceilings raised, atria redrawn, a new sky garden

The completed work redraws ceilings, floors, columns and the atrium void edges across the public realm. Increased ceiling heights open up the volumes through the building, giving the atria more presence and the shopping floors a more generous feel. The top-level dining floor has been reworked as a culinary anchor for the building, while a new sky garden on the roof offers a planted social space open to both visitors and pets. Restrooms have been modernised with new fixtures and finishes throughout.
