A heritage department store, reopened for the contemporary city
TSUM is Kyiv’s central department store, sited at the intersection of Khreshchatyk and Bohdan Khmelnytsky streets and protected as an Immovable Monument of Local Significance of Ukraine. The Art Deco building opened in 1939, was damaged during the Second World War, rebuilt between 1955 and 1958, and renovated again between 2012 and 2016, the work for which Benoy was appointed architect by ESTA Holding.

Façade preserved, interior rebuilt
The brief required full restoration of the heritage Art Deco façades from 1939 and 1956, paired with a complete rebuild of the interior. Both elevations were preserved and the original interior replaced in full, with a new spatial structure organised around a sculptural free-form void that turns through the centre of the building.
Nine levels of retail
The new TSUM brings together three basement levels, six trading floors and a rooftop housing restaurants and outside terrace, with 22,000m² of retail across the whole. The central void creates new sightlines between floors, threading a department store typology that originated in the nineteenth century through a contemporary spatial logic.
A flagship for Ukrainian retail
Since reopening, TSUM has functioned as Ukraine’s flagship department store, featuring over 300 Ukrainian brands alongside international labels and drawing approximately 200,000 visitors a month.
