A bold city landmark with a valley at its heart
Wuhan Guanggu Joy City is the third major collaboration between Benoy and Grandjoy Holdings and the second Joy City in the series, for which Benoy served as masterplanner and architect. Located in Guanggu New Area – Wuhan’s high-tech industrial zone, whose name translates as ‘Valley of Light’ – the 419,000m² mixed-use development comprises a six-storey commercial building, two office towers and a central outdoor courtyard known as Joy Valley. Seamlessly connected to Metro Line 11, Wuhan Joy City received a Merit Award for Comprehensive Commercial Project at the 10th CREDAWARD.

419,000m²
A social destination for young professionals
Joy Valley was designed to serve the entertainment, technology and social needs of Guanggu’s core demographic, young professionals aged 18–35 working in the surrounding technology and creative industries. The design concept, ‘external light, inner valley’, organises the scheme around the contrast between its bold urban-facing façade and the human-scale environment within. A ring-shaped layout shelters Joy Valley from outside interference, while themed atrium spaces along the internal retail loop maintain a visual connection between interior and exterior. A three-storey planted wall and an illuminated orange bridge give each elevation a distinct identity, carrying the light concept across the building’s exterior and into the landscape.
An 800m² LED screen within Joy Valley anchors the courtyard as an event and activation space, reinforcing the development’s role as a social destination as well as a commercial one. Pedestrianised walkways and bridges connect the commercial spaces to outdoor recreational areas across the full site, encouraging movement at multiple levels and dissolving the boundary between shopping and social space.

Responding to Wuhan's climate
Wuhan Joy City holds the China Green Building Two-Star Certification and was developed in close collaboration with Tsinghua University to optimise its environmental performance for the city’s hot summers and cold winters. The high-efficiency chiller plant achieved an energy efficiency ratio of over 5.5 in 2023, saving approximately 1.57 million kWh of electricity and reducing carbon emissions by around 894 tonnes annually. Photovoltaic panels and air-source heat pumps further improve clean energy use across the complex.
The building envelope uses heat-insulating glass and energy-saving lighting to reduce cooling, heating and lighting consumption to a standard exceeding national requirement. The overall layout is optimised for natural ventilation, reducing air-conditioning demand during transitional seasons, while the Joy Valley concept integrates rockeries, greenery and multi-layered landscapes indoors and outdoors, blurring the boundary between commercial space and nature and enhancing the complex’s microclimate. A rainwater harvesting system supports irrigation, landscape water and toilet flushing, and BIM technology enables real-time monitoring and operational optimisation across the full lifecycle of the building.
