Transforming a constrained rooftop into a biodiverse outdoor workspace
Ealing Cross is a serviced office building on Uxbridge Road in west London, a short walk from Ealing Broadway station. Benoy was appointed to transform an underused rooftop into high-quality outdoor workspace for corporate tenants, converting a constrained, largely unplanted surface into a green environment that supports both focused work and informal connection.
Flexible spaces for different modes of work
The design creates a range of distinct zones within the terrace, from open social areas for group gatherings to smaller, more enclosed nooks offering privacy and outlook across the surrounding urban landscape. The variety of settings allows the space to support different activities throughout the working day: solo reflection, small meetings, or larger informal gatherings, without any one use dominating the others.
Planting under constraint
Limited depth and load conditions on the existing roof informed the entire planting strategy. A biodiverse palette suited to the restricted growing conditions achieves genuine green density without exceeding structural tolerances, creating a rich, low-maintenance landscape that performs visually year-round. Together with open views across west London, the planting establishes a clear sense of remove from the working environment below, supporting the mental wellbeing brief at the heart of the commission.
