A 1996 mixed-use building, reopened to its river
Designs for the architectural renovation of Riverside Point, a 17,000m2 mixed-use development on Merchant Road between the Singapore River and the Clarke Quay precinct. Owned by Far East Organisation and originally completed in 1996, the building combines retail, food and beverage, offices and serviced apartments on a long linear site. Benoy’s scheme reworks the public elevations and the river edge to bring the development into closer relationship with its waterfront.
Lantern gateways address the city
The two principal addresses are marked by full-height five-storey illuminated lantern gateways on the north-west and south-east elevations. The south-east gateway aligns with the main pedestrian intersection at Read Bridge, where movement between Merchant Road and the Clarke Quay quarter concentrates. The lanterns hold the linear site between two strong civic addresses and mark Riverside Point both at street level and along the riverfront
after dark.
Terraces that extend dining onto the water
Along the riverfront, projecting terraces give food and beverage tenants the room to extend their operations beyond the existing facade and engage with the river promenade. Indoor dining flows directly into open alfresco seating, with covered, planted and exposed thresholds composed as a single continuous offer that steps down toward the water. The same approach is carried through to the serviced apartment and garden terraces above, drawing residents and visitors into the rhythm of the river precinct rather than holding them behind a hard street line. The completed scheme reintegrates Riverside Point into the wider food, drink and entertainment quarter of the Singapore River.
