Retail designed around a living landscape
Jewel Changi Airport extends Changi’s offer beyond its terminals with a retail and hospitality destination connecting three of the airport’s four terminals. Benoy led the retail interior design and aviation facility planning, collaborating closely with design architect Safdie Architects to deliver an interior that navigates the many interfaces between aviation and retail. In 2024, Jewel recorded more than 80 million visitors, the highest annual footfall since opening, and it regularly ranks among Singapore’s top attractions.

137,000m2
At Jewel’s core, a 40m Rain Vortex (the world’s tallest indoor waterfall) anchors a five-storey Forest Valley of more than 2,000 trees and 60,000 shrubs. Benoy’s retail interior design works with this landscape, organising more than 280 retail and F&B units along elliptical paths that draw visitors through the space in a continuous circuit. Generous lightwells bring natural light deep into the lower levels, reinforcing the sense of a living interior.
Central to the design process was balancing commercial aspirations with the psychological needs of those using the space. A neutral material palette reduces stimulation and allows the retail units to generate their own visual activity. Wide promenades, voids and lightwells maintain sightlines between levels, while regular breaks between retail units offer views across the full width of the building and its verdant centre. The natural vein of the stone flooring is oriented on a 45-degree angle, a subtle devise that provides visual cues and supports intuitive wayfinding.

Central to Jewel’s programming is its role as a connector between terminals and as a landside destination for Singaporean residents. Pedestrian pathways and an inter-terminal train draw travellers through the space, while direct MRT access, approximately 20 minutes from the city centre, has made Jewel a popular weekend destination for families and locals. The Canopy Park at level five, with 14,000m2 of gardens and leisure attractions, reinforces Jewel’s identity as a public destination, rather than a conventional airport retail offer.
