The departure lounge interior of Manchester’s expanded T2

Manchester Airport is one of the UK’s largest international hubs. The expansion of Terminal 2, the largest single construction project to take place in Greater Manchester, included a complete redesign of the International Departure Lounge. Benoy designed the interior concept for the lounge across two levels, which now accommodates the majority of the airport’s international departing passengers.

A regional identity translated into pattern and planting

The interior takes its cue from Manchester’s worker bee, the city’s long-standing emblem of industrial heritage, translated into a hexagonal honeycomb pattern that runs through the surfaces, ceilings and detailing of the lounge. At the centre sits a double-storey living wall, surrounded by bespoke seating, a children’s playground and an expanded retail and dining offer that includes a designer area with champagne bar and a high-street zone of familiar brands. The pattern and planting combine to create a regional sense of place to an environment that conventional airport interiors tend to flatten.

The Terminal 2 expansion has been delivered in phases, with the first sections opening in 2021. The redevelopment has taken the annual capacity from 25 million to 35 million passengers, handling roughly 70% to 80% of total airport traffic.
