Complementing one of China’s most dynamic and luxurious tourist destinations

The CDF Mall II is a mixed-use retail development on Hexin Island in Haitang Bay, Sanya, is the first development of its type in Hainan province. Benoy provided masterplanning and architecture for Phase II, which connects to the existing Phase I shopping centre via a pedestrian bridge.

Drawn from the island’s natural forms

Phase I takes its architectural reference from the Haitang flower native to Sanya. Phase II responds in kind: the defining roof canopies echo the form of pearl oysters and seashells embedded in the sand, their smooth, sinuous curves reflecting the South Sea pearls native to Hainan. The two phases are designed to be read together, distinct in reference but unified in language. The canopies do more than define the building’s identity. In a coastal climate characterised by high humidity and seasonal typhoons, they maximise air circulation, provide solar shading and offer protection during severe weather, functional as well as formal.

Programme

The development organises its offer across four themed zones, lifestyle, sports, culture and seafood, each curated to support a different mode of visit. The lifestyle area houses a retail arcade; the sports zone gathers established international sportswear brands; the cultural zone provides space for events and performances; and the seafood area combines a market with a range of dining options. A double-decker layout distributes foot traffic across levels, extending dwell time and commercial reach.
